The European Union commented on the decision of India on Kashmir


The European Union is closely monitoring developments in Kashmir. 

On Thursday, August 8, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said during a telephone conversation with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi



The content of the conversation was distributed by the Pakistani Foreign Ministry.

Federica Mogherini emphasized that "the escalation of tension could adversely affect both the peace process in Afghanistan and the security situation in the region."According to her, the EU continues to closely monitor the development of the situation in Kashmir.

"The (recent) actions of India (the abolition of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. - Ed.) May aggravate the situation of protecting human rights along the control line and seriously affect peace and stability in South Asia," Kureshi said in turn, urging the interlocutor to make this, the issue for discussion by representatives of EU member states.

Recall, the Government of India announced on Monday, August 5, the decision to repeal Article 370 of the Constitution, which gives the state of Jammu and Kashmir special status. 

According to the Minister of the Interior of India, Amit Shah, in parliament, Jammu and Kashmir is losing state status and becoming union territory (having fewer rights than the state), the historical region of Ladakh, which also becomes a union territory, is being separated from it. 

Other changes in the status and management of Jammu and Kashmir are also expected. At the same time, the state will retain its legislative body.

According to the constitution of India, Jammu and Kashmir have special autonomy, in this state, all the laws adopted by the central government (with the exception of the defense, external relations, and some others) had to be approved by the local assembly. Residents of other regions of India did not have the right to buy land in Kashmir.

History reference. First Indo-Pakistani War 1947-1949 started because of a dispute over the ownership of Jammu and Kashmir. 

As a result of the war of 1947-1949, India gained control over about 2/3 of the region, the rest went to Pakistan. The Kashmir conflict has led to tensions between the two countries, which generally remain unchanged.


Recall that earlier the Pakistan Air Force shot down two Indian Air Force fighters, one of which fell on Pakistani territory.
In addition, at least one Indian Army soldier and two Pakistani military personnel was killed in a shootout in Kashmir on the control the line between the two countries.
